e Batt., Ronc.] e' Lim. Since Bocc. has a tironian et, Lim.'s reading is not possible.
/-no/B2SLP1-
The gloss refers to all of stanza 10.
fosse is followed by ore cancelled
Occasional overtracing by hand C-3 begins here, continuing until the end of the gloss.
a
Scribe C-3 has overtraced the last several lines of a faded text, creating some miscopied forms in the process. The phrase, which the Eds. read as contra Creon, is crudely copied and the first word is unclear. The second word is problematic because Bocc.'s preferred form of the name is Creonte. He writes Creon only in the poem and only when constrained by the meter (10). (The numbers in parenthesis indicate how often a particular form occurs in AUT.) When otherwise possible in the poem, he uses Creonte (13). In writing prose, whether in the rubrics (3) or the glosses (10), he always uses Creonte. (Note also that the present gloss 2.10 contains three earlier uses of Creonte in Bocc.'s hand.) The poorly-traced letters have been emended, using the form in NO and the glossed alpha and beta MSS.
Another problem raised by Scribe C-3's retracing is ebbe, which creates the need for an emendation in the next line: ebbe victoria et luccise. (The Eds. have silently supplied this.) In this case, however, scribe C-3 cannot be blamed since Bocc.'s copying, which is partly visible under the retracing, reads as victoria luccise. The substitution of avendo for ebbe is based on the visible remnants of Bocc.'s original and the reading in the other glossed MSS.
The over-traced thebani by scribe C-3 appears as con Creonte in the glossed alpha and gamma short-text MSS. Traces of an under-text are visible and can be matched to this reading. (The beta MSS, including NO, have a different reading.) In addition, logic argues that Palemone and Arcita would have been sent to be imprisoned in Athens because they were with Creon rather than merely because they were Thebans.
The mid-dot preceding the gloss is displaced because of the period after dolore in the line above.
